VIC VARGAS/ MOVIE ADS 1963-69

The 60s was the decade of action movies. It saw the emergence of action superstars i.e. Fernando Poe, Jr., Joseph Estrada, Romeo Vasquez, Zaldy Zshornack, Jess Lapid, Eddie Fernandez, Tony Ferrer, Jun Aristorenas and Bernard Bonnin. Sampaguita Pictures, whose roster of talents comprised mostly of talented dramatic stars, came up with a new discovery, a judo and martial arts expert, in the person of young Vic Vargas. He was discovered by Doc Jose Perez, owner of Sampaguita, while teaching karate lessons in a TV program. His entry to the movie world was met with skepticism and apprehension by his contemporaries. But he proved them wrong and stood up his ground. He made several movies under his home studio, most notable were Diegong Tabak (1963) and Kumander Judo (1964) both in a lead role. His acting talent was recognized by FPJ when he was cast in an epic film, “Perlas ng Silangan” in 1969. He was later tapped in Ishamel Bernal’s Pagdating sa Dulo (1971) and El Vibora (1972). That started his colorful career as a major action and dramatic star.
