ANOTHER LOOK AT AVENIDA Circa 30s & 40s or 50s

Part of the 'haul' I got from a second-hand shop are these two rare old shots of Avenida, probably in the 30s (first photo) and in the 40s or 50s (second photo). Look at those cars and buses, now sought-after collector's and vintage models.

I love this one. Manila looks so clean and orderly then.

And look at the way people dressed. They're all prim and proper, including the cochero!

Filipinos must indeed lived very aristocratically in the old days!

Simon, JM,
Wow, that's my bailiwick in the late 50s/60s, hahaha. BTW, if you don't have this yet better grab it in Amazon for 49cents ($2.98 shipping). A movie starring Tom Selleck, Paraluman, Vic Diaz, Vic Silayan, etc. shot in Manila around 1971. This was before Selleck became a big star with Magnum PI. The movie is titled DAUGHTERS OF SATAN. In the title sequence Selleck is seen driving through Rizal Avenue, you can clearly see Avenue Theater, also driving through Quezon Bridge, what looks like Divisoria and he parks in Plaza Santa Cruz. Later in the movie he walks, crossing Legarda.

I have this movie. Ha-ha-ha. I saved it just for the sake of the old Manila "look".

You should also buy LESLIE NIELSEN's PROJECT: KILL (1976) (produced by the Ayalas),

or JACK NICHOLSON's FLIGHT TO FURY (1964)

Simon, maiba ako. Alam mo ba na si Nemesio Yabut na naging Makati Mayor ay isa rin palang artista noong dekada 50 na may screenname na Edgardo Llanes? Isang pelikula ang ginawa niya na may title na "LAGRIMAS" by Pablo Gomez (his first published short story). At ang kapareha niya ay isang nagngangalang Rita Rio. Sana meron ka mahanap na movie ad nito.

James, never heard of the movie or encounter the ad. Just googled it and it turned out that "it (Lagrimas) became a heavy grosser at the box-office." Curious how the ad looks like. Something to look forward to.

JM, I think "Flight to Fury" had two versions--- it was released here as "Cordillera" with Joseph Estrada in the lead role. In the international version, Estrada had only a small part. A certain Dewey Martin and a young Jack Nicholson starred and our very own Vic Diaz had a major role. see link http://andrewleavold.blogspot.com/2008/04/jack-nicholson-monte-hellman-in.html

Simon,

Saan ba ang shooting noong THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY, starring Mel Gibson? sa Avenida ba o Quiapo?
Kunyari sa Jakarta Indonesia kuno...

Auggie,
The one with the Chinese Pagoda was shot in Quiapo, you can see it from R. Hidalgo or QC Blvd. I think the Pagoda has been destroyed. The closing scenes were shot on the street and the building that's now the National Museum. I've seen the movie several times.
